The Microformat Preservation Program
Publications are microformatted for a number of reasons, among those are the following:
- poor quality paper ensuring that the publication will
not last long in its natural state,
- the publication was issued using non-stable techniques
such as mimeograph, xerox, etc.,
- the publication is so voluminous that it takes an
excessive amount of shelf space and therefore would be difficult to use,
- the publication will be of greater research value if
organized as a collection and microformatted together rather than treated as
individual items,
- the publication is either old or rare and should be preserved in several different
formats.
Currently our production is limited mostly to microfiche; however, the microform section
is anticipating the full operation of the microfilm camera. The microfilm camera enables the office to
increase both quantity and quality. Material that has been microformatted is distributed
through the Photoduplication Services in Washington D.C.
