Office
Jakarta is the regional office for Southeast Asia. The Jakarta office is responsible for collecting material, both in paper and electronic resources, specifically from Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and East Timor while also overseeing the offices in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila. These sections were established to meet the informational needs of the United States Congress and the American people.
The staff actively seek out and collect materials that would otherwise be unavailable to researchers in the United States and worldwide. The staff coordinates with vendors to buy new books as they are published. We maintain contacts with various international governmental and non-governmental organizations to discover and acquire material that does not always appear in the commercial market. Trips are taken to collect materials from outlying provinces. Furthermore the staff regularly searches local bookstores and the web to watch for material that might have been missed. We also obtain publications through exchange programs with other institutions. This office collects more than 3700 serials and 5300 monographs annually. Once the material is acquired, the staff do all the original cataloging. We also bind and microformat material when it is necessary for preservation.
The office is located in the heart of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, on the island of Java. The office compound includes a courtyard with a small, two-story house, one addition holding the Microformat Section and a second addition for serials and shipping.
