The Philippines through European Lenses: Late 19th Century
Photographs from the Meerkamp van Embden Collection
by Otto van den Muijzenberg
Dutch anthropologist Dr. Otto van den Muijzenberg's award-winning THE PHILIPPINES THROUGH EUROPEAN LENSES, had launched a book around photographs collected by a Dutch businessman on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. The launch is organized by the Departments of History and Sociology & Anthropology, together with the Ateneo Press, as part of the celebration of the School of Social Sciences Week.
The book's engaging narrative revolves around photographs collected by a Dutch businessman, Meerkamp van Embden (1862-1931). He was 21 years old when he first arrived in the Philippines, at a time when the economy was gradually opening up. Throughout his whole working life as a cigar manufacturer and trader in Manila, and later as honorary consul of the Netherlands from 1889 to 1927, he kept a thousand or so photographs, which were preserved by his family in twelve albums. It was from this collection that Dr. van den Muijzenberg later chose and put together, this time from his own perspective, pictures that depict and/or comment on) the lifestyle of the expats and ordinary people, socioeconomic activities in many parts of the country, and political upheavals of the period.
The Indonesian Heritage Trust visits LOC, Thursday January 21,
2010
BBPI – Badan Pelestarian Pusaka Indonesia - The Indonesian Heritage
Trust is a national civil society organization aiming at strengthening
and assisting heritage conservation in Indonesia. Several of their
members visited the Library of Congress Jakarta. A lively discussion
ensued about the state of preservation, especially published and
written materials in Indonesia. Their visit was an opportunity in
strengthening the awareness of the importance of natural and cultural
heritage. The Library of Congress-Jakarta invited BPPI to come to
LOC’s office to see our efforts on preservation, binding,
microformatting, quality control and digital scanning. In this
opportunity, LOC Jakarta also talked about the importance of Indonesia
participating in the “World Digital Library”, Metadata as well as the
importance of bibliographic control and also our experience how we
preserve the unpublished works of Pramoedya Ananta Toer. We also
learned about possible collections and titles that the Library of
Congress maybe interested in having copies.
Hopefully in the near future, our small efforts encourage communities in general in achieving an improved sustainable Indonesian preservation culture.
Celebrating the Life and Art of Adelina Gurrea by BeatrizTardío
(28 January 2010)
The Ateneo School of Humanities and the Ateneo Library of Women Writings was launch of Beatriz Álvarez-Tardío WRITING ATHWART, a book on the life and works of Adelina Gurrea, on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at the Concourse of the new Rizal Library Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
Adelina Gurrea was born in 1896 in La Carlota, Negros Occidental, of Spanish parents. Everyday occurrences in the hacienda as well as the tropical environment in which she grew up figure in her works, in particular, in her collection of short stories, Cuentos de Juana. When Adelina was 25, she moved back to Spain with her mother. Though far away from the land she had come to love, she continued to contribute to Philippine writing through her poetry, short stories, drama pieces, and essays.
WRITING ATHWART, Adelina Gurrea's Life and Works/La Escritura Entrecruzada de Adelina Gurrea, is the product of Dr. Tardío’s painstaking quest for recovering Philippine identities through literature in Spanish. Through this bilingual anthology, readers can enjoy Adelina Gurrea’s original texts, as well as Beatriz Tardío’s close reading and engaging translation of them.

REPORT ON THE 7th BOOK FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE JULY 8-12, 2009 Knowledge and Wisdom Station
The Book Festival For Young People is being held for the seventh time at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center. It was held from July 8th, 2009 to July 12th, 2009 from 10.00-20.00 hrs. The admission is free. It is organized by the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (PUBAT).
The aims of the Book Festival are the following: to promote reading and develop learning skills for young people up to the age of 18, to promote Thai people from children to adults to value reading as means of learning, promote parents, teachers and librarians to provide appropriate reading materials for young people, promote the publishers to be aware of the young people’s need for reading and provide a variety of books targeting them..
The first goal of the Book Festival was to provide children with books and textbooks by letting them have the opportunity to know the publishing houses. The second goal was to target 300,000 people to come to the Book Festival. The target were teachers, librarians, children, youth, and the general public to come to see the exhibitions, purchase books and participate in the activities at the Book Festival.
The Education Ministry says youths are keener on reading nowadays. In 2003, Thai children read an average of seven lines a day, and that number had increased 7.9 per cent by 2005. In 2007, children were reading an average of 12 lines a day and the ministry is hoping to build on that success. Children were reported to be the largest reader group at 87.7 per cent, followed by teenagers at 83 per cent. The 2005 National Statistics Office survey showed 45 per cent of Thais read cartoons, novels and miscellaneous books, 36 per cent read magazines and 34 per cent read textbooks.
The Book Festival contained many booths selling cartoons, chic literature, and translations of international best-seller books, for e.g. Harry Potter. Since it was not a summer break there were not that many children and perhaps with the H1N1 flu in Thailand many were wearing masks to protect themselves. There were 180 publishing house booths. Everyday there are activities on the stage as well as meetings and seminars.
The Library of Congress, Bangkok Office acquired many titles that were published in Thailand. Most of the monographs are award-winning or runners-up. LC Bangkok purchased 35 titles of Thai monographs; these materials would be offered to the CAPSEA in the circular lists sent out on a monthly basis.

The Philippine 13th Academic Book Fair was held on June 23-27, 2009 at the Megatrade Hall 1, 5th Level Building B, SM Megamall, EDSA, Mandaluyong City. More than 40 publishers, booksellers and university presses participated in this five-day event.
Ms. Nanette Abas and Dexter Dalay of LOC-Manila attended and acquired more than 20 good titles from the said fair. From their feedback, it was gathered that most of the booksellers who participated displayed foreign publications and textbooks. The 3 big Metro Manila presses (Ateneo University Press, University of the Philippines Press and UST Publishing House) were there as well as some of LOC Manila vendors with BPAs. During the times that the LOC staff were in the book fair there were not too many people/buyers thus confirming the statement of some stall owners that the sales was not that good.
